Gani Geci sees Anton Quni as a suitable candidate for president

Former Democratic League of Kosovo (LDK) MP Gani Geci has proposed the party’s MP, Anton Quni, for the post of president of the Republic of Kosovo.

During an interview on the “Debate Corner” programme on Tëvë1, Geci described Quni as a figure who could bring the sides together.

“All LDK MPs will vote for him. He embodies the spirit of Koshare and the war. I think they will all vote for him,” Gani Geci said on Friday.

The issue of electing the president remains linked to the political developments that followed the June 7 elections, which were held as a result of the parties’ inability to reach an agreement on a candidate for the new president.

After the elections, the Vetëvendosje Movement, which was in power, called for the constitutive session to be postponed. The reasoning was that, without an agreement on the president, the constitution of the Assembly and the formation of the government would not eliminate the possibility of new elections.

After several meetings, VV leader Albin Kurti and LDK leader Lumir Abdixhiku announced that they had agreed on Bekim Sejdiu’s candidacy for president. The agreement was opposed by six LDK MPs.

Meanwhile, the Democratic Party of Kosovo maintained a clear position of remaining in opposition and refused to discuss any candidate with VV.

On September 23, the Constitutional Court found that the Assembly had been constituted and that the formation of the “Kurti 4” government did not contravene the Constitution. In the same decision, the court set October 6 as the deadline for electing the president, assessing that this deadline had begun on August 8.
