France has once again expressed its unwavering support for Kosovo’s independence and institutions following the Specialist Chambers’ judgment convicting Hashim Thaçi, Kadri Veseli, Rexhep Selimi and Jakup Krasniqi.

In a statement, the French Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs said it had taken note of the judgment in the “Thaçi et al.” case, emphasizing that the defendants have the right to appeal.
“This decision, which may be appealed, marks the conclusion of the first-instance proceedings before the Specialist Chambers, with the exception of cases related to obstruction of the administration of justice,” reads the statement published on the ministry’s website, KosovaPress reports.
The French authorities also stated that they continue to support the Kosovo Specialist Chambers and efforts to combat impunity.
“France reiterates its support for the Kosovo Specialist Chambers and recalls its commitment to the fight against impunity. It also reaffirms its unwavering support for Kosovo’s independence and its institutions,” the statement said.
Paris’s response came after the trial panel found the four former leaders of the Kosovo Liberation Army guilty of war crimes, including unlawful or arbitrary arrest and detention, cruel treatment, torture and unlawful killing.
Hashim Thaçi and Jakup Krasniqi were each sentenced to 25 years in prison. Kadri Veseli received an 18-year sentence, while Rexhep Selimi was sentenced to 13 years in prison.
The judgment is not final, as it may be appealed. The defense teams for those convicted have announced that they will take the case to the Appeals Chamber.
