Four Killed in Gang-Related Attack in Spain, Including a 16-Year-Old and a Pregnant Woman

A shooting in Isla Cristina, in the southern Spanish province of Huelva, claimed the lives of four people on Sunday evening, August 16.

Those killed were a 39-year-old pregnant woman, the eight-month-old unborn baby she was carrying, her 62-year-old mother, and a 16-year-old. Preliminary findings from the investigation indicate that the teenager may have had no connection to the conflict.

The shooting also left two people injured. An 18-year-old is being treated in hospital in a very serious condition, while another man suffered minor injuries.

According to the Guardia Civil’s initial reconstruction, the attack took place at around 10:00 p.m. in the working-class El Rocio neighborhood. Two masked individuals riding a motorcycle opened fire on a group of people.

After opening fire, the attackers set the motorcycle ablaze and abandoned it in a pine grove near the Giralda campsite before fleeing.

Footage recorded by the campsite’s security cameras has been seized by investigators. Meanwhile, authorities have stepped up checks throughout the municipality, including at the cemetery where funeral ceremonies for the victims are being held.

Huelva’s deputy prefect described the incident as a “possible revenge attack between clans,” although the investigative team continues to pursue all lines of inquiry.

The Guardia Civil suspects that the two women killed were, respectively, the mother-in-law and sister of a man with a criminal record known by the nickname “El Baba.” He is suspected of carrying out another shooting in September 2024 in a neighborhood near Huelva, in which one person was killed and two others were injured.

Investigators suspect that the September 2024 incident may have marked the beginning of the armed conflict between the clans, which has now claimed further victims.

The 18-year-old who was seriously injured in Sunday’s attack is suspected of being “El Baba’s” nephew.

Since 2024, the Guardia Civil has carried out several raids and arrests in Isla Cristina, targeting individuals suspected of belonging to the clans involved in the conflict.

The case is being investigated under a secrecy order and is being overseen by the judicial authorities. Police are continuing their efforts to identify and arrest the perpetrators.
