Former Qatari Emir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani dies at 74

Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, the former Emir of Qatar, has died at the age of 74. Confirmation of the news came from the Emiri Diwan, the highest government institution in the country.

He remains one of the most defining figures in Qatar’s contemporary history. Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani took over the leadership of the country in 1995 and remained in power until 2013, when he decided to voluntarily hand over leadership of the state to his son, the current emir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani.

Such a step was considered unusual for the region, where the voluntary transfer of power rarely happens.

During his 18 years at the head of Qatar, he led the country toward major economic growth, supported by the exploitation of vast natural gas reserves. At the same time, Qatar significantly strengthened its presence on the international stage, taking on an important role in diplomacy, investment, and media.

Under his leadership, the foundations were also laid for the “Qatar National Vision 2030” strategy, a long-term project focused on diversifying the economy and the country’s sustainable development.

As of these moments, Qatari authorities have not made public the causes of the former emir’s death. Likewise, details of the official mourning ceremonies have not yet been given.
