Filipçe: Budget must allocate €1 billion to the Pension Fund this year

Venko Filipçe, leader of SDSM, said that the Pension and Disability Insurance Fund (PIOM) is becoming increasingly reliant on state finances. According to him, around €1 billion will be needed from the budget this year to pay pensions.

Speaking on Kanal 5’s “Samo intervju” program, he said that in previous years, the Pension Fund’s budget shortfall amounted to approximately €500 million.

Data presented by Filipçe show that the deficit reached around €530 million in 2024 and approximately €690 million in 2025, while it is projected to rise to €1 billion in 2026.

In his assessment, the widening gap indicates a deterioration in the financial situation. He warned that an increasingly large share of the funds needed for pensions will have to be covered directly by the state budget.

Filipçe also criticized the across-the-board method of increasing pensions, stressing that such an approach is not fair to all pensioners.
