Execution of Albanian woman in Greece: 44-year-old had decided to divorce, was attacked a day before meeting her lawyer

Greek media have revealed new details about the crime that took place in Greece yesterday, when Albanian national Bujar Muço, 53, killed his wife, Esma Meço, 44.

The 44-year-old is believed to have been a victim of domestic violence for many years, and had decided to finally leave her husband.

According to reports in the Greek media, the woman had arranged to meet with her lawyer to proceed with the divorce, but her husband took her life one day before the meeting.

In the village of Dialambi, everyone has only good things to say about the unfortunate 44-year-old. They say she was a fighter who cared for her family.

For this reason, during the summer months she worked seasonally on the islands, as she did this year when she worked on Thassos, returning to celebrate her 16-year-old daughter’s birthday.

The reason behind all the episodes of domestic violence allegedly committed by the perpetrator appears to have been his jealousy, while the possibility that the murder occurred after he learned that his wife was going to file for divorce has not been ruled out.

It appears that the 53-year-old was taking medication and had previously been admitted to a psychiatric clinic, but it was determined that he did not need further hospitalization.

In 2022, the woman reported him for domestic violence when they were in Crete, and although he was subsequently arrested, he was released again.

Meanwhile, a relative of the 53-year-old described him to protothema.gr as “a good man whom we never expected to do something like this,” stressing that they were aware of the conflicts but never expected him to kill her.

The crime

The murder took place at midday on Wednesday (26 August), when the 53-year-old stabbed his 44-year-old wife while her 16-year-old daughter and their 19-year-old son were inside the house. The minor saw her mother die before her eyes, while the 19-year-old was the one who took her to the hospital, but she died there.

Immediately after the horrific crime, the 53-year-old stabbed himself and consumed an unknown quantity of liquid, possibly pesticide or oil, in an attempt to end his life.

The Department of Investigation and Prosecution of Crimes in Komotini has brought charges against him for involuntary manslaughter, domestic violence and violations of the Weapons Law. He remains hospitalized, but is not in danger of losing his life.
