Albanian Woman Killed in Greece Was Preparing for Divorce; 19-Year-Old Son Took Her to Hospital

New details have emerged about the killing of 44-year-old Albanian woman Esma Meço in the Rhodope region. Her husband, 53-year-old Bujar Meço, originally from Gramsh, is suspected of fatally stabbing her in the home where they lived.

The crime occurred on the afternoon of Wednesday, August 26, in the settlement of Dialambi. According to reports, the 44-year-old was stabbed in the neck. The couple’s 16-year-old daughter was also at home and witnessed the tragic scene.

Immediately after the attack, the family’s 19-year-old son rushed his mother to Komotini Hospital. Doctors tried to save her, but she succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced dead.

Authorities seized two knives at the scene of the crime. Following the incident, the 53-year-old suspect attempted to take his own life. He was taken to the same hospital after drinking an unknown quantity of liquid suspected to have been either pesticide or oil. He had also inflicted superficial knife wounds on his abdomen.

Bujar Meço remains hospitalized under police guard. Reports indicate that his condition is not life-threatening.

Following the killing, it emerged that Esma Meço had decided to seek a divorce. Lawyer Evangelia Kola said the 44-year-old had called her just one day before the crime to proceed with the divorce process. They had arranged to meet on Thursday, but the victim never had the opportunity to take that step.

According to the lawyer, Esma Meço had endured domestic violence for years and had previously reported violent incidents. These included an incident in Crete in 2022, as well as another incident in Komotini.

Evangelia Kola also said that the victim’s husband was taking medication and had, at one point, been admitted to a psychiatric clinic. It was later determined that he could continue his treatment outside the hospital.

Investigators are examining suspicions that jealousy and the 44-year-old’s decision to end the marriage may have contributed to the conflict that culminated in her killing. The lawyer described the incident as femicide, stressing that the couple’s relationship had long been marked by violence and jealousy.

Esma worked seasonally at a hotel establishment in Thassos. She had returned home to be with her 16-year-old daughter, whose birthday fell on August 26.

The victim’s two children, aged 16 and 19, are now facing the consequences of the devastating family tragedy. Greek authorities have launched criminal proceedings against the 53-year-old for murder, domestic violence, and violations of weapons legislation. The investigation is continuing to clarify all the circumstances and how the crime unfolded.
