During her speech at the European Parliament in Strasbourg, where Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney was also present, von der Leyen stressed that the EU and Canada share democratic values and similar positions on issues such as artificial intelligence, climate, the war in Ukraine, and geopolitical developments.

“We want to take the relationship with Canada to the highest possible level. We urgently need to reimagine our partnerships. Therefore, I would like to work with you to open the door for Canada to become the first associate member of the EU,” von der Leyen said.

Carney, who is expected to deliver a speech at the European Parliament on Thursday, had earlier called for building a “unique alliance” between Canada and the EU.

The proposal comes at a time when Canada is trying to reduce its dependence on trade relations with the United States.
