EU: Kosovo’s Justice System Must Reflect the Country’s Ethnic Composition

The European Union has expressed concern over the decree issued by Kosovo’s acting president dismissing Serb prosecutors, as well as the decision taken a day earlier by the Kosovo Prosecutorial Council not to accept the withdrawal of their resignations.

In a press release, the EU spokesperson said that these measures “appear incompatible with the law, due process and the general requirements of the rule of law in Kosovo.”

The EU welcomed the decision by Kosovo Serb judges, prosecutors and support staff to withdraw their resignations. However, Brussels recalled that it has repeatedly called on Pristina to create the conditions for the reintegration of Kosovo Serb judicial personnel, in accordance with the country’s laws and the agreements reached within the framework of the dialogue.

“The EU calls on all responsible institutions to avoid any action that could hinder the reintegration of Kosovo Serb judicial personnel. The Constitution defines Kosovo as a multiethnic society founded on the rule of law, and the justice system must therefore reflect the country’s ethnic diversity,” the statement said.
