Elisa Spiropali: Developments in Serbia create a new opportunity for the Balkans, as peoples can topple regimes that appear eternal

Following the elections in Serbia, where the Student List triumphed over Alexandar Vuçiç, Elisa Spiropali has reacted. The Socialist MP said that the result of the Serbian elections could create new opportunities for the Balkans.

According to her, the will of the citizens has the power to change even governments that consider themselves everlasting.

Spiropali’s reaction:

“With their vote, the Serbs expressed their demand for change massively, perhaps bringing an end, once and for all, to the period of Aleksandër Vuçiç’s political dominance.

The elections in Serbia once again demonstrated that peoples have the opportunity and the strength to change the course of their country, even when faced with regimes that seek to appear permanent.

I hope that this election will mark the beginning of a new stage for Serbian democracy and regional cooperation.

What happened in Serbia has opened up an opportunity for the Balkans, the assessment of which will be made step by step, depending on the actions and reactions that follow. As Chancellor Merz has underlined, the lack of progress in normalizing relations between Kosovo and Serbia is hindering the region’s development. The new leaders have the opportunity to show that change also means abandoning chauvinistic thinking, demonstrating a willingness to engage in dialogue, implementing agreements and respecting Kosovo’s sovereignty.

I would like to convey a special greeting to the Albanian representatives of the Preševo Valley, hoping that their presence in parliament will bring greater equality, rights and opportunities for Albanians in Serbia.

Albania has an interest in a democratic and European Serbia. This orientation will be tested by the way the new government responds to its citizens and develops relations with neighboring countries. With the support of the EU and the United States, this opportunity must be turned into concrete action to build lasting peace, which we owe to the citizens and the younger generation of the Balkans,” Spiropali wrote.
