After several days of increases, the retail price of diesel in Albania has fallen sharply. Several major fuel retail chains have reduced the price of diesel from 214 lekë to 199 lekë per liter, bringing it below the 200-lekë mark for the first time in several weeks.

The move comes as international markets have begun to reflect a decline in oil prices following the sharp increases of recent weeks, which were quickly passed on to the Albanian market.
The development brings renewed attention to how the market operated from March to June this year, when the Transparency Board was activated due to sharp fluctuations on international exchanges.

During that period, maximum fuel prices were set by the Board, while operators’ compliance was monitored on the ground.

Unlike during that period, this evening’s price cut is not the result of an administrative decision but has been implemented directly by operators at retail outlets, in line with the latest developments on international markets.
It remains to be seen whether the government will decide to reinstate the Board.
