Died after a collision during a football match, grief and tears at the funeral of a 16-year-old Albanian in Greece

In an atmosphere of deep mourning, family members, friends and teammates bid a final farewell to 16-year-old Albanian Asllan Gjana, who died after being injured during a football match at the Panagia stadium on the Greek island of Thasos.

The tragic incident occurred last Sunday, just minutes into the match. According to preliminary information, the 16-year-old was involved in a challenge for the ball near the touchline when he lost his balance and fell, hitting the back of his head against the perimeter fence.

Following the impact, the teenager lost consciousness and was transported to the intensive care unit at Kavala Hospital. Despite doctors’ efforts, he died on Tuesday morning, September 29.

Investigation into the circumstances of the death

In addition to examining how the injury occurred, the investigation is also focusing on the suitability and safety conditions of the stadium where the match was being played.

Thasos police, in coordination with the Kavala Prosecutor’s Office, are verifying whether the field met the established safety standards and whether all the necessary protective measures were in place for hosting matches.
