A New York Police Department (NYPD) officer has died from complications following cosmetic surgery in the Dominican Republic. Her family is calling for the case to be investigated to determine whether medical negligence was involved.

Rebecca De Paula, 31, who had been on the police force for less than two years, died on Sunday morning. She had undergone a procedure to remove her breast implants at a clinic in Santo Domingo.
Her family said that the officer developed a bacterial infection after the surgery, which is suspected of contributing to the deterioration of her health.
Rebecca’s mother traveled to the medical center after being informed that her daughter was in critical condition. However, when she arrived, she learned that the 31-year-old had died.
De Paula was honored in March as “Officer of the Month” at the 46th Precinct in the Bronx in recognition of her “outstanding police work and dedication to the community.”
In addition to serving as a police officer, Rebecca was a mother of three and served as a pastor alongside her husband.
Patrick Hendry, president of the New York City Police Benevolent Association, expressed his sorrow over the officer’s death.
“Our hearts are heavy over the loss of our sister, Police Officer Rebecca DePaula, who passed away off duty after just 18 months on the job. We ask all New Yorkers to keep her family, friends and colleagues in their prayers during this difficult time,” he said.
Rebecca De Paula’s relatives have asked local authorities in the Dominican Republic to verify the circumstances surrounding her death and investigate whether medical errors were made or negligence occurred during the procedure.
Plastic surgery experts note that breast implant removal can cause various complications, including infections, blood clots, heart and lung problems, fluid buildup, or hematomas.
According to data from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 93 deaths linked to cosmetic procedures among U.S. citizens in the Dominican Republic were recorded between 2009 and 2022.
De Paula’s case follows another tragic incident within the New York Police Department. In October 2025, NYPD Detective Alicia Stone died one week after undergoing a Brazilian butt lift and liposuction in Colombia.
Rebecca De Paula’s family is awaiting the conclusion of the investigation, which is expected to help determine the full circumstances surrounding her death.
