Following the 7.4-magnitude earthquake that struck western Colombia and caused severe damage, authorities have declared a national state of emergency. Dozens of people have lost their lives as a result of the disaster.

The seismic tremors were recorded on Monday at 07:34 local time, or 12:34 GMT. The earthquake’s epicenter was located in the Chocó region, in the west of the country.
The force of the quake caused extensive damage, while emergency teams have been involved in search-and-rescue operations and are working to determine the extent of the destruction.
The decision to declare a national emergency will enable the deployment of the resources and forces needed to manage the situation, as well as the delivery of aid to the affected areas.
There have also been reactions from abroad following the earthquake. Several countries have declared their readiness to help Colombia with rescue teams, medical personnel, equipment and supplies.
