The Special Prosecution Office against Corruption and Organized Crime (SPAK) has rejected a request by British lawyers to meet with Tirana Mayor Erion Veliaj, who is being held in pretrial detention in Durrës.

A week ago, the lawyers requested that the meeting be held on September 10 so that Veliaj could sign the application to refer his detention case to the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg.
The application in Strasbourg is now expected to proceed without the scheduled meeting with the lawyers.
Veliaj is seeking to take his detention case to Strasbourg following victories in the Constitutional Court.
It is worth recalling that the mayor has been behind bars since February 2025, while SPAK has charged him with passive corruption in nine instances, money laundering, concealment and failure to declare assets, abuse of office, as well as introducing illegal items into his cell.
