Berisha after return from US: Even after 35 years I presented myself as opposition leader, but today I sought support against another dictatorship

Democratic Party leader Sali Berisha held a press conference after returning from the United States of America, where he attended the Republican Convention for the midterm elections.

During his speech, Berisha focused on his visit to the US, linking it to his first trip to the country 35 years ago. He highlighted several similarities between the two visits and explained the political messages he conveyed this time.

Berisha described the Republican convention as one of the most beautiful events organized in the US. Alongside the IDU delegation and the PR chairman, the party’s international relations secretary, organizational secretary, deputy chairman, and the LDG chairwoman also participated.

According to him, the grandeur of this convention is not limited to the US alone, as the two major American parties, especially the Republican Party currently in power, have no rivals on the planet for the imagination and electoral organization of their conventions.

Berisha said that, despite the 35-year gap, or as he put it, light years apart, the latest trip had three points in common with his first visit.

“In both cases I went to the US as leader of the opposition or of the largest opposition force. That is the truth,” the DP leader stated.

He added that both then and now, the main goal was to seek support from the American administration and the Albanian diaspora.

During the first visit, according to him, this support was sought for overthrowing the totalitarian communist dictatorship, while today it is for confronting an authoritarian dictatorship supported by drugs, crime, and the theft of Albanians.

Berisha also recalled his first trip to the US, when together with his late friend Gramoz Pashko, he participated in the ceremony restoring diplomatic relations between Albania and the United States.

He remembered that at that time, gossip and the entire establishment turned against him and Gramoz Pashko, accusing them with epithets related to treason and agency.

According to Berisha, this time too attacks were not absent, and due to the large number of media outlets in “Colonel Buendia’s Macondo,” they have been even more numerous.
