Sanchez acknowledged that his government had “made mistakes” and had failed to accomplish everything it had planned.

In his address to the nation, Sanchez declared that “to do more, popular support must be renewed and expanded”.

The decision to take the country to elections came after an intense weekend of consultations with members of the government, leaders of the Socialist Party and representatives of the political forces supporting the executive.

Sanchez has therefore decided to dissolve Parliament around nine months before the end of its term, although he had until now stated that he intended to see the legislature through to the end.

It is worth recalling that Spanish citizens have been protesting over housing for several days.
