Abdixhiku Brings LDK Back into Talks with LVV: Is the Way Opening to Overcome the Political Crisis?

After being reconfirmed as leader of the Democratic League of Kosovo, Lumir Abdixhiku announced that his party would resume discussions on forming the new institutions as soon as the LDK General Assembly concludes.

Abdixhiku said the suspension of talks was lifted as of that moment and that the LDK was ready to discuss the institutions. According to him, common principles must first be aligned with the Vetëvendosje Movement, while the issue of positions and the distribution of responsibilities will be addressed at a later stage.

LDK MP Lutfi Haziri also spoke about the possibility of cooperation with the Vetëvendosje Movement, outlining three basic principles on which he believes an agreement could be built.

Haziri said the first principle requires a comprehensive agreement based on the formula “either on everything or on nothing.” As the second principle, he cited the state agenda, the governing program and sectoral policies, with the interests of the Republic as the priority.

The third principle, according to him, concerns clearly defining the responsibilities and roles of the potential coalition partners, formalized through a genuine cooperation agreement.

Haziri stressed that responsibilities must be divided through a cooperation agreement, as otherwise the LDK will initiate processes.

Balaj: The decisive factor will be whether exclusion or institutional responsibility prevails

In comments to “Bota sot,” political analyst Labinot Balaj said Abdixhiku’s renewed mandate may have been necessary for the LDK’s political repositioning, but it is not enough to form the institutions.

According to Balaj, the outcome of the vote at the Assembly will not be the determining factor. He said what will matter is the political decision that follows and whether an exclusionary approach or the logic of institutional responsibility prevails.

Balaj believes several factions continue to coexist within the LDK, although two of them stand out more clearly. One faction is linked to Lumir Abdixhiku’s reconfirmed leadership, while the other is represented by influential party figures, including Abdulla Hoti, Arben Gashi and Hykmete Bajrami.

He recalled that these figures have spoken out against governing jointly with Vetëvendosje. For this reason, he said, the completion of the institutions, specifically the election of the president, faces a real risk.

The analyst warned that if this position prevails in the LDK’s decision-making after the Assembly, Abdixhiku’s reconfirmation will not necessarily resolve the institutional deadlock. However, he told “Bota sot” that, in the most optimistic scenario, Abdixhiku’s new term as party leader could serve as the beginning of a new political phase for the LDK.

Rexhepi: An LDK-LVV coalition government is among the strongest options for stable institutions

Guxo member Agim Rexhepi said Lumir Abdixhiku’s reconfirmation strengthens his political legitimacy and places him in a stronger position during negotiations to establish the institutions.

In Rexhepi’s assessment, Abdixhiku now enters talks with a renewed mandate from the party and becomes the principal interlocutor in any such process. According to him, this gives Abdixhiku greater room to make strategic decisions without facing the same level of internal pressure as before.

However, Rexhepi told “Bota sot” that Abdixhiku’s reconfirmation does not automatically guarantee a coalition between the LDK and LVV. He said such an agreement depends on the governing program, how institutional responsibilities are divided and the willingness of both sides to compromise.

Rexhepi noted that recent reports have referred to contacts and even an agreement in principle, but neither side has provided official confirmation so far.

Speaking about the political deadlock, he said an LDK-LVV coalition would be one of the strongest alternatives for creating stable institutions if the two parties manage to build trust and agree on the main issues of state.

According to Rexhepi, cooperation between the two parties with the greatest electoral support could produce a more functional majority and avert new elections. He concluded in his comments to “Bota sot” that the fate of such a coalition would depend not only on the numbers in the Assembly, but also on the ability to build political trust and reach agreement on key state issues.
