Halilaj on LDK-LVV Relations: Abdixhiku’s Re-Election Does Not Automatically Guarantee a Coalition

Lumir Abdixhiku, who was re-elected leader of the LDK, has announced that once the General Assembly concludes, his party will resume discussions related to the formation of institutions.

According to Abdixhiku, the first step will be dialogue with the Vetëvendosje Movement to align their principles. The allocation of responsibilities is expected to be considered only at a later stage.

Commenting on these developments for “Bota Sot,” lawyer Gazmend Halilaj said that the new mandate gives Abdixhiku full legitimacy and strengthens his authority to lead the LDK. However, he said this does not mean that the path toward a coalition with the LVV has opened automatically.

Halilaj explained that Abdixhiku’s reconfirmation as party leader is a politically significant development because it enables him to make strategic decisions on behalf of the LDK. However, he stressed that cooperation with the Vetëvendosje Movement remains dependent on the political willingness of both parties, the compatibility of their governing programs and, above all, the interests of the state.

According to him, having secured a confirmed mandate, Abdixhiku can be expected to wield greater influence within the LDK and have broader scope for dialogue with other parties. This mandate strengthens his position in negotiations and confirms him as the LDK’s legitimate representative in any potential political process.

However, Halilaj emphasized that the talks should not be reduced solely to the distribution of power. According to him, any negotiation process should be conducted transparently, based on clearly defined principles and with mutual respect.

In Halilaj’s assessment, an agreement between the LDK and the LVV would make sense only if it aimed to overcome the institutional crisis and ensure political stability. He said that cooperation built on a joint program, judicial reforms, the fight against corruption, economic development and the strengthening of democratic institutions could provide a solution for the country.

Otherwise, he warned that a coalition formed solely to secure the numbers needed to govern, without a shared vision, would struggle to survive for an extended period.

In conclusion, Halilaj told the newspaper that the main task of all political parties should be to make the institutions functional and protect the public interest. He stressed that citizens want the institutional crisis to be overcome, improved well-being and the rule of law. Therefore, any coalition should be judged by its ability to achieve these goals, rather than solely by parliamentary calculations.
