Abdixhiku Ahead of Meeting with Kurti: Constitution of Parliament Must Not Be Delayed

Shortly before meeting with acting Prime Minister Albin Kurti, Democratic League of Kosovo (LDK) leader Lumir Abdixhiku said there was no reason for the Assembly of Kosovo not to be constituted on time.

Abdixhiku said the focus was on constitutional obligations and proceeding with the steps required to form the institutions.

“We will continue with the work we need to do to constitute the Assembly. There is no reason to delay the constitution of the Assembly. Now, please allow me to go to the meeting, and I will make a statement afterward,” he said.

Asked by the media about the substance of the LDK’s request, the party leader replied that it concerned “…the constitution of the Assembly.”

Regarding the possibility of reaching an agreement during the day or convening the constitutive session, Abdixhiku said the meeting should be held without delay.

“There must be a constitutive session. There must be a constitutive session. There is no need to delay the constitution of the Assembly. The speaker and the Assembly Presidency must be elected. The LDK has neither requested nor is requesting that such delays occur,” he said, EO reports.

According to Abdixhiku, responsibility for the normal continuation of this process also lies with the leading party, while he suggested that the constitution of the Assembly should not be turned into a negotiating tool.

“But now, this is also the responsibility of the leading party, which happens to have its oldest member at the session, sitting in the chair of the Assembly’s presiding officer. But if this has been done as a negotiating tactic, let us be very clear: the LDK will not submit, and the Republic will not surrender. Therefore, we will neither submit nor surrender,” he said.

The LDK leader announced that he would speak to the media again after the meeting.

“I am now going to the meeting, and during the meeting we will do our best to represent the interests of Kosovo, the people of Kosovo and the Democratic League of Kosovo. After the meeting, we will also address the media at the Assembly of Kosovo,” Abdixhiku said.
