Kurti and Abdixhiku Fail to Reach Political Agreement, LVV and LDK Announce Next Steps

On 07.08.2026, the third meeting between Vetëvendosje leader Albin Kurti and Democratic League of Kosovo chairman Lumir Abdixhiku ended without a political agreement. The talks took place with only a few hours remaining before the constitutional deadline for constituting the Assembly expired.

At 14:16, Abdixhiku arrived at the offices of the Assembly of Kosovo for another meeting with Kurti. The meeting was expected to show whether the parties could achieve a result that would pave the way for the formation of state institutions.

One minute later, at 14:17, the acting prime minister of the Republic of Kosovo said as he entered the Assembly building that he would inform the public as soon as a political agreement was reached.

Kurti described the talks with the LDK as no longer news in themselves, but as normal efforts to form the institutions as quickly as possible. He added that only a political agreement would provide new material for the media.

Before the meeting, at 14:30, Abdixhiku stressed that there was no reason to delay the process of constituting the Assembly of Kosovo. According to him, the focus should remain on fulfilling constitutional obligations without delay.

Asked about the LDK’s demand, he briefly explained that it concerned the constitution of the Assembly. Abdixhiku called for the constituent session to be held and for the speaker and the Assembly Presidency to be elected, emphasizing that the LDK had neither requested nor was requesting such delays, EO reports.

The LDK leader also said that responsibility for moving the process forward also lay with the leading party, which had its oldest member sitting in the chair of the presiding officer of the session. He warned that if the delay was being used as a negotiating tactic, it should be clear that the LDK would not submit and the Republic would not surrender.

Before entering the meeting, Abdixhiku promised that he would strive to represent the interests of Kosovo, the people of Kosovo and the Democratic League of Kosovo as effectively as possible. He announced that he would speak to the media again at the Assembly of Kosovo after the talks.

After the meeting ended, at 15:38, Abdixhiku said there had been no new developments and that the LDK and Kurti’s party remained “very, very far from an agreement.”

At 15:39, the LDK chairman explained that his party was seeking the right to nominate the presidential candidate in the event of a coalition with LVV. He described the December offer, under which the LDK would receive only the post of deputy prime minister and several ministries, as insufficient and undignified.

Abdixhiku said the LDK could neither accept nor consider such an offer. According to him, if the LDK’s participation was being sought, then the party should have genuine representation. He acknowledged that the post of prime minister did not belong to the LDK and that, under the Constitution, the position of speaker belonged to LVV, while the only representation would be the right to put forward a nomination—not a blank-check nomination—because the president would serve all of Kosovo.

In his statement at 15:49, Abdixhiku announced that he had asked Kurti to call the session to constitute the Assembly that same evening because, in his view, there was no need for the country to enter a crisis.

He explained that discussions could continue even after the Assembly was constituted, as the parties would still have 25 days to seek a solution.

At 16:00, Kurti also spoke after the meeting about efforts aimed at resolving the situation that had arisen over the issue of the president. He said that a democratic balance had to be guaranteed and the will of the citizens, as expressed in the June 7 elections, respected.

According to the acting prime minister, the obstacle that had prevented a political agreement from being reached up to that point was the wide disparity between the respective election result and the specific ambitions. Nevertheless, he called for hope not to be lost and for optimism about reaching an agreement to be maintained.

Kurti recalled that Osmani had been elected president after entering the race under a formula in which number 1 would become prime minister and number 2 president. He stressed that this time the presidency should be filled through consensus.

The LVV leader opposed the election of a party-affiliated president and proposed that the parties find a consensus candidate grounded in values and principles. He said he knew a number of people who could perform the role, but did not want to mention specific individuals so that it would not later be said that the name had been proposed by Albin Kurti.

Finally, Kurti said he was doing everything possible to find a way out of the situation.
