Kurti-Abdixhiku Meeting Ends Without Agreement, LDK Seeks Right to Nominate President

On 07.08.2026, at 14:16, Lumir Abdixhiku arrived at the offices of the Assembly of Kosovo for another meeting with Vetëvendosje Movement leader Albin Kurti.

This was the third meeting between Kurti and Abdixhiku and took place with only a few hours remaining before the constitutional deadline for constituting the Assembly expired. It remained to be seen whether the talks would produce a result that would pave the way for the formation of state institutions.

At 14:17, as he entered the Assembly building, the acting prime minister of the Republic of Kosovo, Albin Kurti, said he would have news to share only after a political agreement had been reached.

According to Kurti, meetings with the LDK were no longer news, but rather routine efforts to constitute the institutions as quickly as possible.

Before the meeting with Kurti, at 14:30, the leader of the Democratic League of Kosovo, Lumir Abdixhiku, said there was no reason to delay the constitution of the Assembly of Kosovo. He called for the process to continue without delay and stressed that the focus should remain on fulfilling constitutional obligations.

Abdixhiku said the LDK would continue the work needed to constitute the Assembly and announced that he would speak after the meeting ended. When reporters asked what his party’s demand meant, he replied briefly that it concerned the constitution of the Assembly.

Asked whether he expected an agreement to be reached or the constitutive session to be convened during the day, the LDK leader insisted that the session should be held without wasting time. He said the speaker and the Assembly Presidency should be voted on, adding that the LDK had not sought and was not seeking such delays, EO reports.

Abdixhiku also stressed that responsibility for moving the process forward also rested with the leading party, whose oldest member at the session was seated in the Assembly chairperson’s seat. He warned that if the delay was being used as a negotiating tactic, the LDK would not submit and the Republic would not surrender.

Before entering the meeting, Abdixhiku said he would try to represent as effectively as possible the interests of Kosovo, the people of Kosovo and the Democratic League of Kosovo. He announced that he would address the media again at the Assembly of Kosovo after the talks.

After the meeting, at 15:38, Abdixhiku said there had been no new developments and that the LDK and Albin Kurti’s party remained “very, very far from an agreement.”

At 15:39, the LDK leader clarified that, in the event of a coalition with the LVV, his party wanted the right to nominate the president.

Abdixhiku described the December offer, under which the party would receive only the post of deputy prime minister and several ministries, as insufficient and undignified for the LDK. He said such an offer could neither be considered nor accepted.

According to him, if the LDK is asked to participate, then the party must have representation. Abdixhiku acknowledged that the post of prime minister does not belong to the LDK and that, under the Constitution, the post of Assembly speaker belongs to the LVV. He said the only form of representation would be the right to put forward a candidate, not a blank proposal, while the president, as he stressed, becomes the president of all Kosovo.
