The so-called “Blood Moon” occurs during a lunar eclipse, when Earth positions itself between the Sun and the Moon. During this process, the Moon takes on a red or dark orange color.

According to astronomical data, around 96 percent of the Moon’s surface will be covered by Earth’s shadow, making the event very close to a total eclipse. The characteristic red color is created by Earth’s atmosphere.

It scatters more blue light, while red wavelengths of light pass through the atmosphere and reach the Moon’s surface.

The greatest phase of the eclipse is expected to occur on August 28, at around 12:12 a.m. Eastern Time in the United States. The full eclipse will be observable in the eastern part of North America and throughout South America.

Meanwhile, in the western part of North America, as well as in some areas of Africa and Europe, only a partial eclipse will be visible, according to NASA.
