The injured woman is Gizella Nazs, a Hungarian national who lives in Palermo. At the time of the incident, she was at her home near the city’s central station.
Initial reports indicate that the 56-year-old had gone outside to hang up laundry when the balcony structure collapsed beneath her feet. As a result of the fall, she suffered serious injuries and was taken to hospital under a red code.
The balcony was in a deteriorated condition and was surrounded by green netting.
Police and fire crews went to the scene, where they intervened and began checks to determine the circumstances of the incident.
An elderly resident near the building where the collapse occurred said that people usually sit beneath those balconies in the afternoon to enjoy the cool air. He said everything happened suddenly and expressed hope that the woman’s condition was not too serious.
The incident in Palermo is the second case of its kind recorded in Italy within just three days.
On August 14, another 56-year-old woman was standing on the terrace of her home, on the third floor of a building in Livorno, when that structure also collapsed without warning.
She fell from a height of around 10 meters and arrived at hospital in critical condition. Although doctors tried to save her, the woman died in hospital.
