The US president’s warning comes after the expiration of the 60-day deadline set out in the June memorandum of understanding, with the parties having failed to reach a final agreement.
The interim document provided for a halt to hostilities and the start of talks on key issues, including Iran’s nuclear program, sanctions and navigation through the Strait of Hormuz. The negotiating process has stalled, while Washington and Tehran continue to blame each other for failing to honor their commitments.
The nuclear issue remains a central focus of Trump’s policy toward Iran. At the same time, the US has reimposed economic pressure and a naval blockade on Iranian ports, while Tehran is demanding the lifting of sanctions and a change in the US approach before returning to the negotiating table.
The expiration of the deadline has heightened fears of further escalation, as the two countries remain far from reaching a final agreement.
