Police confirmed that the victim was 29-year-old Cristiano Giamporcaro, a well-known director and the son of Maria Castiglione, who previously served as a councillor in the municipality of Caltanissetta.
Initial information from the scene indicates that the 29-year-old was in the waters off Punta Sottile together with a female companion. The couple is believed to have intended to go diving, but his companion left the water immediately after entering it.
Unlike her, Giamporcaro remained in the sea and tried to signal his location by waving a handkerchief. Unfortunately, moments later, a dinghy carrying two visitors struck him with its propellers.
Authorities are still investigating the full circumstances of the fatal accident. Preliminary investigators say that the injuries sustained in the collision with the propellers were extremely serious.
The victim’s body was recovered by Coast Guard personnel, who received assistance from a private vessel that operates on such rescue missions.
Initial information from the investigation indicates that the young man’s death may have been caused by massive blood loss. It is suspected that one of his upper limbs was almost severed by the force of the propellers. However, the definitive cause of death will be established after the forensic examination is carried out.
