Following the entry into force of the European Union’s new Pact on Migration and Asylum, Germany expects transfers of migrants to Italy and Greece to resume.

Speaking to the ANSA news agency, a spokesperson for the German Interior Ministry stressed that the effective functioning of the Dublin system is a decisive prerequisite for the success of the Common European Asylum System (CEAS).
German authorities believe that the new pact, which entered into force on June 12, paves the way for the resumption of transfers to countries such as Italy and Greece.
Berlin’s position was made known following questions about the future of migrants who have arrived in Germany and, in particular, the possibility that they could be required to return to Italy under the rules of the Dublin system.
Under this system, the EU member state responsible for examining an asylum application is determined. In many cases, this responsibility is assigned to the country through which the migrant first entered the territory of the European Union.
