More than 20,000 residents have been forced to flee their homes in western Canada as a major wildfire rapidly advanced toward populated areas near Okanagan Lake in the province of British Columbia.

Authorities have issued an evacuation order for the entire community of Summerland, which has approximately 12,000 residents. A similar measure has also been taken for around 8,000 people living in Peachland and its surrounding areas, while the exact number of damaged buildings has not yet been disclosed.
The blaze, named “Bald Range,” was first reported late Friday, but within a few hours it had grown to cover an area of around 50 square kilometers. The fire also swept through the small community of Faulder and advanced nearly 15 kilometers toward Summerland.
According to emergency crews, it is one of the fastest-growing and most rapidly spreading fires ever recorded in the region.
Emergency coordinator Erick Thompson himself had to leave the operations center and evacuate his family as the flames rapidly approached residential neighborhoods.
Videos and photographs circulating on social media clearly show homes engulfed in flames and lines of vehicles fleeing along roads shrouded in thick clouds of smoke.
Among those evacuated were Kerry Gold and her husband, Mike Elsinga. The couple left their home at around 00:30 after noticing flames racing down the surrounding mountains. “It’s terrifying. It’s moving so fast,” Gold said. She and her husband had also made sure to take their pet with them.
In recent years, Canada has faced increasingly aggressive wildfire seasons, prompting large-scale evacuations and blanketing entire regions in smoke in both Canada and the United States.
Meanwhile, firefighting crews continue working to bring the situation under control, and residents of at-risk areas have been urged to stay away from the fire line.
