Mount Etna, one of the world’s most active volcanoes, recorded another eruption this Saturday, creating a vast cloud of smoke and ash over the surrounding area.

Due to the volcanic activity, authorities temporarily restricted the airspace over Sicily. Catania Airport announced that all arriving flights would be suspended until 12:00 local time.
Meanwhile, departures continued as normal for aircraft already at the airport. Footage released by Italy’s National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology showed a dense column of smoke rising from Mount Etna’s crater.
At 3,324 metres high, Mount Etna is considered Europe’s tallest active volcano. Catania Airport, which serves eastern Sicily, handled around 12 million passengers in 2024.
