Residents of a city in Indonesia have been gripped by panic after a monkey attacked 18 people, including children and the elderly.

Local authorities said a total of 19 attacks were recorded, as one of the victims was bitten twice. Junaid Ismail, head of the fire and rescue service in Tembilahan, confirmed the information to AFP.
Some of those injured suffered serious wounds and required more than 10 stitches. Because of the risk of rabies from the bites, doctors also administered anti-rabies treatment.
The monkey was found and captured on Thursday after becoming trapped in the urban area. It was then taken to Pekanbaru, the capital of Riau province on the island of Sumatra, where it will be examined by the agency responsible for wildlife protection.
Fears that further attacks could occur prompted the closure of 40 schools in the area on Friday. Hundreds of students were instructed to attend classes online for three days, until the emergency was over./TAR
