The bombings occurred one day after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s meeting with US President Donald Trump at the White House. During the talks, Zelensky asked Trump for additional air defense systems for his country.
Ukrainian authorities announced that the Russian strikes hit several parts of the territory, including Kyiv. One fatality was recorded in the Ukrainian capital.
The heaviest toll was recorded in Kryvyi Rih, Zelensky’s hometown. A ballistic missile struck a residential building, killing six people and wounding at least eight others. Rescue teams continue to search the rubble, and authorities have warned that the death toll may rise.
Significant damage was also reported in the western city of Lviv. Emergency services are trying to extract people who remain trapped, while more than a dozen individuals are reported wounded.
The attack prompted Poland to scramble fighter jets to monitor and protect its airspace.
Just hours before the start of the bombings, Zelensky had warned that Moscow was preparing a large-scale missile attack across Ukraine.
At the same time, Ukrainian forces continued their counterstrikes. A drone hit a warehouse of the Russian company Wildberries in the Penza region, where a major fire broke out. Russian authorities stated that one person was wounded, while about 200 others were evacuated from the area.
