The United Nations’ International Maritime Organization, which is responsible for safety, estimates that the number of sailors stranded in the Strait of Hormuz is 6,000.
The organization’s Secretary-General, Arsenio Dominguez, said the attacks only worsen the fear, insecurity and despair of the stranded sailors.

“The attacks only worsen the fear, insecurity and despair already being suffered by 6,000 people at sea who remain stranded on ships unable to leave the Gulf safely,” said Arsenio Dominguez, the organization’s secretary-general, in a statement.
He also urged shipping officials to avoid sending vessels through Hormuz.
