Canada and the EU create the “Alliance for the Future” for closer cooperation

Canada and the European Union have agreed to create a new strategic alliance, dubbed the “Alliance for the Future.” The initiative aims to strengthen economic, trade, technological and security ties amid growing geopolitical uncertainty.

The announcement was made in Montreal during the two-day Canada-EU summit, attended by Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President António Costa.

The parties aim to build a more interconnected market, make trade and travel easier, and expand education and employment opportunities for Canadian and European citizens.

The agreement also provides for reducing dependence on American technology and defense suppliers. To this end, Canada and the EU will work to create joint capabilities and diversify supply chains.

Cooperation will extend to areas such as artificial intelligence, energy, defense and securing critical minerals. Researchers from Canada will be able to use Europe’s supercomputing network, while negotiations on a new digital trade agreement have concluded.

One of the elements of the agreement is the possibility of Canada becoming an associate member of the European Union. If realized, it would be the first partner to receive this status, while details regarding the content and scope of membership are expected to be determined in the coming months.

Mark Carney and European leaders have described the alliance as an important step toward strengthening economic sovereignty, security and resilience in the face of global challenges.

The initiative has not gone unchallenged in Canada. Quebec Premier Paul St-Pierre Plamondon did not attend the summit, expressing criticism of how the federal government had handled the province’s role in the process.
