Despite a high alert being declared, many people were on the platform when the attack occurred, according to preliminary information. Emergency teams rushed to the scene to help the injured.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky responded on the social media platform X, expressing his condolences to the victims’ families and calling for further measures against Moscow.
“I extend my condolences to the families and loved ones of those who died. Ten other people were injured. All necessary emergency services are working at the scene,” Zelensky wrote.
He also criticized the easing of sanctions on some Russian oligarchs and Russia’s energy sector, stressing that such an approach had not helped ease tensions.
Zelensky urged the European Union, the United States and G7 countries to impose new and tougher sanctions on Moscow and the entities supporting the war.
