Hegseth removes general overseeing strategic planning at the Pentagon as new strikes on Iran are considered

U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has dismissed Lieutenant General Brett Sylvia, who oversaw planning and strategy at the U.S. military’s Joint Staff.

The decision was made as President Donald Trump considers the possibility of resuming strikes against Iran. U.S. media report that no public reason has been given for his removal, while Sylvia’s successor has not yet been named.

A Joint Staff spokesperson expressed the leadership’s gratitude for the 32 years Sylvia served in the U.S. military and wished him and his family well in the future.

As the directorate responsible for military planning and developing strategic recommendations for senior command and the president, the J5 Directorate carries significant weight. For this reason, Sylvia’s removal is receiving particular attention amid ongoing tensions with Iran.

The U.S. military is reportedly preparing various options for military action. Meanwhile, allies and countries in the region have been warned to prepare for a possible escalation as Trump considers new strikes following months of conflict between the two countries.

Sylvia is another senior military official to leave his post during Hegseth’s tenure at the Pentagon. Before being appointed to the Joint Staff, he was commander of the U.S. Army’s 101st Airborne Division.

The repeated departures of military leaders have drawn criticism from some U.S. lawmakers. They have raised concerns that frequent changes at the highest levels of command could harm the military’s experience and institutional continuity.

The U.S. administration has yet to make a final decision on a new offensive against Iran. The situation remains tense, and the possibility of military escalation continues to be considered.
