Osmani: Contacts with the Trump administration should be daily and at the highest level

Vjosa Osmani, Kosovo’s former president and currently an LDK MP, said that communication with the administration of US President Donald Trump should be continuous, close and conducted at the highest political levels.

According to her, ties with the United States are of particular importance for Kosovo’s freedom, independence, democracy and development, as well as for the country’s international support and economy.

“American support has a long history in relation to Kosovo’s freedom, independence, democracy and development. Even today, the United States remains our main friend and partner, as well as our collaborator. Its support is significant on the international stage, while cooperation with it is also essential for the economy. Therefore, communication with President Trump’s administration should be close and daily, and conducted at the highest level possible.

I am not referring only to contacts with some State Department officials, but to necessary communication with the highest-ranking political officials in this administration. This communication should not be limited to those of us who have previously held office, but should also include the current leaders of the institutions. They must engage on this issue, which is essential to Kosovo’s success and future,” Osmani said.

Asked about the Law on Specialist Chambers, Osmani said that her decision on whether the law could be returned to the Assembly would be determined by the content and reasoning presented by the current president.

“My position will depend entirely on the content. As you know, returning a law to the Assembly must also be accompanied by an explanation. In principle, I support every president’s right to use what is known in practice as a veto. We have expressed fundamental concerns about the content of this law and did not vote for it. Now we must wait to see whether the law will actually be returned and, if so, what concerns the President of the Republic has; afterward, we will review its content,” Osmani declared.
