Konjufca at the UN: Serbia killed 12,000 innocent Albanians, while Gjuriq said nothing

Kosovo’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Glauk Konjufca, criticized Serbia’s Foreign Minister, Marko Gjuriq, during a session of the UN Security Council. Konjufca said that Serbia had killed 12,000 unarmed and innocent people in Kosovo, while Gjuriq had said nothing about the crimes committed by Serbia.

“Under its flag, Serbia killed 12,000 innocent and unarmed Albanians in my country. Minister Gjuriq did not say a single word about them. To me, this is a denial of justice: he denied these crimes, even though his state committed all these massacres,” Konjufca declared.

During his speech, Konjufca also commented on the recent decision by the Specialist Chambers, which found four former leaders of the Kosovo Liberation Army guilty. He noted that, although it has been emphasized that the KLA is not on trial and that the decision is not intended to diminish the importance of the liberation war, the harsh sentences remain a serious concern for Kosovo.

“We believe that the decision contains errors in its content and in the treatment of the facts. We expect them to be corrected on appeal,” Konjufca said, adding that Kosovo would work to correct the injustice at that level.

He called on Serbia not to obstruct Kosovo’s membership in international organizations and to accept mutual recognition as the foundation of relations between the two countries. Konjufca stressed that the sovereignty of the Republic of Kosovo cannot be negotiated. In his speech, he also mentioned discrimination against Albanians in the Preševo Valley and what he described as Serbia’s destructive actions, including sabotage, espionage and the stoking of tensions.

Speaking about security in the northern municipalities, the minister said that the closure of illegal structures operating from Serbia had contributed to improving the situation. According to him, this had enabled KFOR forces to optimize their positions and Kosovo’s institutions to deepen integration with the Serbian community, based on the equal treatment of citizens.

Konjufca concluded by saying that, now that all institutions have been constituted, the Government of Kosovo will continue with its agenda for socioeconomic prosperity, justice and security.
