Skopje to install cameras at more than 200 locations to curb vandalism and illegal dumping

Damage to benches and parks, as well as the emergence of illegal dumps, are among the problems facing Skopje. To prevent these phenomena, the Municipality plans to install more than 200 surveillance cameras at problem locations. The project is expected to begin once final approval is received from the Personal Data Protection Agency.

Skopje Mayor Orce Gjorgjievski announced today that the cameras will cover areas where illegal dumps frequently appear, as well as parks where acts of vandalism have been recorded.

Among the cases he mentioned was City Park, where the “Lotos” fountain was renovated, but the nearby benches were again damaged with graffiti.

Gjorgjievski said that teams from the city’s public enterprises have painted the urban fixtures several times, but the damage has continued.

According to the mayor, measures and inspections alone are not enough to protect public spaces; citizens must also show greater responsibility.

“The City of Skopje does not belong to Orce or to any political party. It belongs to all the residents of Skopje and, just as we take care of our homes, we must also take care of the city,” Gjorgjievski stressed.

He added that the funds used to repair damaged equipment and address the consequences of careless behavior could instead be invested in new projects, including the construction of parks.

In Butel, according to his announcement, construction is nearing completion on a park covering 86,000 square meters, in an area that was once occupied by illegal dumps. A park covering more than 70,000 square meters has also been announced in Karposh, along with the development of an area of nearly 100,000 square meters in Aerodrom, which is expected to be put into use by the end of next year.
