According to the Austrian daily, the visit could provide a “welcome break” for Rama, while protests in Albania have continued for months and participants are demanding his resignation after 13 years in power.
“For the Albanian prime minister, Monday’s trip to Vienna will be a welcome interruption to the protests that have engulfed his country for months. A short visit to Austria may also be seen as a courtesy visit to a wealthy neighbor: Austria is the sixth-largest foreign investor in Albania, while in 2025 trade between the two countries reached its highest level,” the newspaper writes.
“Kurier” emphasizes Austria’s economic importance to Albania, highlighting the companies Verbund, Strabag, Raiffeisen Bank, Vienna Insurance Group and CINEPLEXX. The newspaper also mentions the expansion of the tourism sector and stresses that, thanks to these economic ties, Austria is among the strongest supporters of Albania’s accession to the European Union, an objective Tirana aims to achieve by 2030.
However, the article contrasts the ceremonial welcome awaiting Rama in Vienna with the tense situation in Albania. According to the newspaper, the protest that began as opposition to an environmental issue has turned into a broad popular movement against the government.
While Rama is expected to receive a military welcome from Federal Chancellor Christian Stocker (ÖVP), protesters in Albania are demanding the departure of the prime minister, who has led the country for 13 years. The “Flamingo Protests,” which began in opposition to a luxury tourism project planned in a flamingo breeding area and reportedly involving Donald Trump’s son-in-law, Jared Kushner, have turned into a mass revolt against the government, “Kurier” concludes.
