In an official notice, the embassy urged citizens to exercise caution, saying that protesters at several demonstrations have used incendiary devices, thrown stones and damaged public and private property. The warning also includes the possibility of road blockades and service disruptions.
According to the embassy, protests are being held in Tirana, Shkodër, Durrës, Vlorë, Korçë, Kukës and Elbasan, mainly in city centers and near government institutions. Some have been accompanied by violence, while further demonstrations may take place in the coming days.
Gatherings may also spread to surrounding roads, resulting in an increased police presence, traffic disruptions, diversions and road closures. The US Embassy has instructed its personnel to avoid areas where demonstrations are taking place.
Citizens are asked to remain vigilant, put personal safety first, follow local media for the latest updates and comply with the instructions of local law enforcement authorities.
Further closures or reductions in public services are expected in Albania, including public transportation, government offices and schools.
The embassy advises avoiding protests, paying attention to the surrounding environment and limiting distractions in public, such as using phones or headphones. It also recommends following local media, having an emergency plan or escape route, and maintaining a low profile.
