The level of food waste in the country is also higher than the European average in restaurants and the retail sector, not just among households.
In European countries, households generate an average of 69 kilograms of food waste per person each year. In North Macedonia, this amount reaches 86 kilograms per person.
According to the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) report, the 2024 Food Waste Index shows that 1.05 billion tonnes of food are discarded worldwide every year. This amount represents 19 percent of all food made available to consumers.
