AFA welcomed the introduction of the SRBIJA Act in the United States Senate, sponsored by Senators Chuck Grassley and Richard Blumenthal. The initiative had previously secured bipartisan support in the House of Representatives.
According to the organization, the fact that the bill is receiving support in both chambers of Congress demonstrates the growing attention in Washington to political developments in Serbia. Its statement mentioned the undermining of democratic standards, pressure on the media, the manipulation of institutions, and the obstruction of free and fair elections.
AFA stressed that US policy should also take into consideration Serbia’s position toward Kosovo, as well as actions that have directly affected regional peace and security. The organization recalled that Milan Radojčić has accepted responsibility for organizing and participating in the aggression in Banjska, while Serbia continues to reject responsibility and oppose his extradition, along with that of his group, to Kosovo’s judicial authorities.
Concerns about Kosovo’s security increased further after the terrorist attack on critical infrastructure at Ibër-Lepenc. According to AFA, the incident demonstrated that the threats are not limited to statements, but can turn into concrete attacks on the country’s infrastructure and stability.
For this reason, the organization believes that a consistent US policy for peace and security in the Western Balkans should include recognition of the reality of Kosovo as an independent state, as well as Serbia’s commitment not to take steps that endanger Kosovo’s security and stability.
AFA also considers Belgrade’s increasingly close political and strategic ties with Russia and China to be concerning. According to the organization, this orientation requires special attention from the United States and its allies.
“Albanians for America” expressed its gratitude to Senators Grassley and Blumenthal, as well as to the members of the House of Representatives who supported the initiative, for their commitment to defending democracy, free elections, media freedom, the rule of law, and stability in the Western Balkans.
