Widespread Inspections of Kosovo Bakeries to Verify Bread Weight and Scales

The Kosovo Metrology Agency (KMA), together with the Central Market Surveillance Inspectorate (CMSI), launched an inspection operation at bakeries across the country today. The main focus is monitoring the weight of bread and the validity periods of measuring instruments.

According to official data, the initial inspections have begun in the Pristina area, with plans to extend them to all other municipalities in Kosovo in the coming period.

The operation comes in response to numerous reports from consumers who have raised concerns about discrepancies between the weight declared by sellers and the actual weight of the product purchased.

As the authority responsible for calibrating measuring equipment, KMA staff inspected whether bakers’ scales were valid and functioning properly. At the same time, inspectors checked whether businesses had obtained approval confirming compliance with minimum technical standards.

The Ministry of Industry, Entrepreneurship, Trade and Innovation (MINTI) announced that, under the Law on Consumer Protection, any discrepancy between the promised and actual weight of goods sold is treated as fraud. Violators face fines ranging from 1,000 to 10,000 euros.

Meanwhile, metrology legislation provides for fines ranging from 500 to 1,500 euros for legal entities that use scales or other measuring instruments outside the permitted standards.

KMA and CMSI are calling on all bakers in Kosovo to regularly check the validity of their scales, ensure accurate measurements and fully comply with their legal obligations to protect customers.

Businesses that have not yet obtained approval confirming compliance with minimum technical requirements are urged to apply as soon as possible to the Ministry of Industry, Entrepreneurship, Trade and Innovation to obtain the necessary documentation.

Finally, the authorities stressed that inspection and monitoring operations will continue throughout the Republic of Kosovo to ensure accurate measurements, compliance with the legal framework and the protection of consumer interests.
