Trump announces energy ceasefire between Moscow and Kyiv, Zelensky: I was not aware

Volodymyr Zelensky has expressed surprise following Donald Trump’s statement about an energy ceasefire agreement between Russia and Ukraine, saying that Kyiv had not previously been informed of such an arrangement.

During a telephone conversation with the US media outlet Axios, the Ukrainian president said Trump’s announcement was new to him. However, he stressed that Ukraine would accept the ceasefire if Russia seriously committed to halting the attacks.

“For me, this is new information. But if the Russians agree to an energy ceasefire, Ukraine will accept it as well,” Zelensky said.

Trump made the announcement through the Truth Social platform, saying that the agreement had taken effect immediately and had been accepted by both sides. However, the US president did not clarify how long the ceasefire would last or how its implementation would be monitored.

According to TGCOM24, at the time Trump published the statement, the Kremlin had still not issued an official response.

It remains unclear how the purported agreement was reached and whether Moscow and Kyiv have definitively agreed on its specific terms.

The energy ceasefire would include a halt to attacks on power-generation facilities and energy supply networks, which have become important targets during the war.

Zelensky also commented on Trump’s demand that Ukraine hold new presidential elections.

He said that determining the country’s political direction is the responsibility of the Ukrainian people and called on the US president to urge Vladimir Putin to agree to a full ceasefire, so that the conditions could be created for elections to be held.

“Please tell Putin, give us two months, 60 days of a full ceasefire, and we will organize the elections,” Zelensky said in an interview with ABC’s This Week.

These statements came during a tense period between Kyiv and Washington, following Trump’s criticism of Ukrainian attacks on Russian oil refineries and disputes over how talks to end the war should proceed.
