The Video That Astonished Canada: Floating Island Appeared on Lake Before Moving Away

A large landmass covered with vegetation and trees suddenly appeared on Williston Lake in British Columbia, only to later disappear from the spot where it was first seen.

The floating island, covering around two hectares, was filmed by a boater, and the video was posted on social media in August. The footage showed a green, forested surface moving across the reservoir’s waters.

Initially, Bob Gammer, a spokesperson for BC Hydro, suspected that it was material created using artificial intelligence. Those doubts were dispelled after a company engineer analyzed satellite images and confirmed that the island was real.

Satellite images from July 21 showed a structure approximately 138 meters long and 69 meters wide. In images taken later, it was no longer in the same position.

BC Hydro, which manages the reservoir and the dam nearby, has managed to determine where the island is currently located. According to Gammer, it has moved around 32 kilometers northwest of the point where it was last seen.

The most likely explanation is that the structure formed from logs and woody debris that had accumulated over the years in protected areas near the lake’s shores. Vegetation and trees may have grown on top of this accumulation, creating a large mass capable of floating on the water.

The water level in Williston Lake is now the highest recorded in the past 14 years. Authorities believe that the rising water level may have helped detach the mass from the shore.

After breaking away, winds may have pushed the structure toward open sections of the reservoir, causing it to travel dozens of kilometers.

Williston Lake is the world’s seventh-largest artificial reservoir by volume and the largest freshwater lake in British Columbia. Since it was filled in 1972, it has covered an area of around 2,700 square kilometers.

BC Hydro has stated that the island poses no risk to the WAC Bennett Dam. Meanwhile, boaters have been warned about the hazards that moving logs and woody debris may cause in the reservoir’s waters.

Although its location has now been determined, it remains unclear how such a large mass covered with vegetation broke away from the shores of Williston Lake and traveled such a long distance.
