The Rhianan Case: How a Horse-Loving 16-Year-Old Was Radicalized Online and Accused of Terrorism

Before her life changed dramatically, Rhianan, from Derbyshire, was known by her family as an energetic and creative girl. She loved horses and dreamed of pursuing a career as a professional rider.

Her other passions included anime, art and costume-making. However, during her teenage years, her family began to notice a profound transformation in her behavior and views.

The British documentary “The Schoolgirl Terrorist?” reveals that, at around the age of 14, Rhianan made contact online with people linked to right-wing extremism. They included American Chris Cook, who is suspected of steering her toward extremist material and Nazi ideology, according to The Sun.

Her previous interests began to give way to a strong fascination with extremist content and Nazism. At the same time, her beliefs and attitudes underwent noticeable changes.

Her mother, Emily, sought help from Prevent, the British program established to prevent radicalization. She alerted the authorities that her daughter was expressing extremist ideas and hatred toward certain groups.

British counterterrorism police arrested Rhianan in 2020, and she was charged with several terrorism offenses. While searching her electronic devices, investigators discovered material that they said was linked to preparations for violent acts.

At the time, the charges made her one of the youngest girls in Britain to face prosecution for terrorism-related offenses.

The case later changed course when the authorities concluded that Rhianan should be considered a victim of trafficking and exploitation. The decision took into account the influence that other people had exerted over her through online contact. The charges against her were dropped in January 2022.

Her family insists that Rhianan was recognized as a victim far too late. According to her relatives, she should have been treated from the outset as a vulnerable child exposed to risk and exploitation, rather than merely as a terrorism suspect.

Even after the charges were dropped, Rhianan remained in a care facility and continued to receive support through deradicalization programs.

However, her relatives say she continued to struggle with numerous emotional problems. They also claim that the effects of extremist ideology had not entirely disappeared.

Emily recalls that, shortly before her death, Rhianan went to visit her and expressed her love. Just days after that visit, the family was informed that the 16-year-old had died.

The circumstances of her death became the subject of an investigation, which also examined how institutions had responded to the case. The findings raised questions about when specialist services intervened and how they handled the situation.

The investigation also examined the role of the people who had communicated with Rhianan online. British authorities said that she had been regarded as a vulnerable minor during the investigation.

Rhianan’s case has become a major focus of discussion about the online radicalization of minors, particularly through manipulation, emotional exploitation and online connections with extremist individuals.
