Senate Approves Limiting Trump’s War Powers Against Iran, in a Strong Signal to the President

On Tuesday, the Senate approved a resolution calling for the withdrawal of military forces from the conflict with Iran, in what amounts to a significant rebuke of Donald Trump and a clear signal that Congress does not support the war.

The resolution passed with 50 votes in favor and 48 against. In support of it, alongside Democrats, voted Republican senators Rand Paul, Susan Collins, Lisa Murkowski, and Bill Cassidy, while Democratic Senator John Fetterman voted against.

Earlier this month, the measure was also approved in the House of Representatives. However, because it is a concurrent resolution, it does not require the president’s signature and, by its very nature, has no legal force.

Earlier in the month, a Democratic aide in the House of Representatives involved in efforts to advance the war powers resolution told CNN that they believe the measure will be binding and that the issue will have to be settled legally.

Democrats have repeatedly pushed for votes aimed at curbing Trump’s war powers, both in the Senate and in the House of Representatives. Over the past few weeks, the initiative has gradually gained more support from Republicans as well, provoking the president’s anger.

This marks the 10th time since the beginning of the year that the Senate has voted on a measure related to war powers toward Iran. A previous Senate-led resolution passed last month, but no subsequent vote has yet been held, while Democrats are working to secure the necessary support to pass it.
