Scorching temperatures do not deter tourists in Rome, lines at the Colosseum as relief teams cool them with water

For several days, Italy has been grappling with intense heat as the heatwave continues to sweep across Europe.

Although temperatures are nearing 40 degrees Celsius, thousands of visitors continue to head to the Colosseum in Rome, undeterred by the extreme heat gripping the country.

Footage recorded at the scene shows Civil Protection teams spraying water on tourists gathered outside the famous monument, while other volunteers hand out bottles of drinking water to help them cope with the scorching temperatures.

Many of them stop only briefly to cool down before continuing their visit to the archaeological site.

Around the Colosseum, these cooling measures bring only limited relief, while the flow of visitors continues throughout the day.

Meanwhile, data from the World Health Organization show that in the past 24 hours, five people have died in the country because of the heatwave.

On Tuesday, 25 major Italian cities were under a “red alert,” the highest warning level for extreme heat. However, according to forecasts, starting this afternoon, heavy rainfall is expected in many areas of northern Italy, often accompanied by hail. Rain is also forecast in central Italy on Thursday.

At the same time, many Italian municipalities have decided to keep their museums free until the end of this severe heatwave. Together with municipal gyms and cultural centers, they are being used as “climate shelters” for residents and tourists.

According to the press, immediate measures are also needed for the country’s public kindergartens. As has been reported, many of them do not have air conditioning, and indoor temperatures have exceeded 36 degrees Celsius in recent days.
