Saturday’s record was recorded in Trikala, where the temperature reached 40.7 degrees. Values above 40 degrees were also reported in other parts of Thessaly and Central Greece.
According to the data, air masses over Greek territory are 6 to 8 degrees warmer than the usual average for this time of year. The heatwave is expected to continue at least until the middle of next week, while Sunday is expected to be one of the most difficult days.
In Thessaly and Central Macedonia, temperatures are forecast to range from 39 to 40 degrees. Around 38 degrees are expected in Athens, while temperatures in Thessaloniki will reach 37 to 38 degrees.
From Monday, a slight drop in temperatures is expected in the north and east of the country, influenced by strengthening northerly winds.
Meanwhile, Western Greece and the Peloponnese will continue to face difficult conditions. Monday and Tuesday could see the highest temperatures, again close to 40 degrees.
Authorities are advising the elderly, children and people suffering from chronic illnesses to avoid staying in the sun during midday hours and to drink as much water as possible. For citizens in need, municipalities have made air-conditioned facilities available.
The most significant drop in temperatures is expected from Thursday, when northerly winds in the Aegean could reach force 7 on the Beaufort scale. However, meteorologists do not rule out a temporary rise in temperatures during the following weekend. Forecasts also indicate that September could be hot, with temperatures 2-3 degrees above the typical seasonal values.
