Barcelona records its highest temperature ever as thermometer climbs to 40.5 degrees Celsius

Barcelona has set a new all-time record for high temperatures, as the thermometer reached 40.5 degrees Celsius, according to regional meteorological services.

This value surpassed the previous record of 40 degrees Celsius, which had been registered in July 2024.

According to meteorologists, Barcelona is usually influenced by its proximity to the sea, which normally helps moderate high temperatures. But the heatwave gripping Spain has caused even coastal areas to face extreme temperatures.

At Barcelona Airport, which is located near the sea, the temperature reached 37.7 degrees Celsius, surpassing the previous record of 37.4 degrees recorded in 2010.

The Spanish meteorological service said the temperatures recorded at the city’s two weather stations are the highest values ever registered in Barcelona.

For several days, Spain has been dealing with a new heatwave, which has hit the northeastern part of the country especially hard, including the Catalonia region where Barcelona is located.

In some areas near the city, authorities have issued the highest alert level, warning of an extreme health risk for residents, especially for the most vulnerable groups.

The heatwave, with temperatures around 40 degrees Celsius in many Spanish cities, is expected to continue in the coming days. Meteorologists have also warned of a very high risk of wildfires due to drought and extreme temperatures.

This is the second major heatwave to hit Spain during this summer season. According to meteorological data, June of this year was among the hottest months since records began.

Authorities have urged residents to avoid prolonged exposure to the sun, drink more fluids and take special care during the hours when temperatures are highest.

Experts stress that extreme heatwaves are becoming increasingly frequent in Europe and are bringing direct consequences for health, the environment and public safety.
